What is Ashtanga Yoga?

A complete guide to the traditional practice

Ashtanga Yoga is one of the most influential and authentic styles of yoga practiced today. Rooted in ancient tradition yet powerfully relevant to modern life, it offers a systematic approach to physical, mental, and spiritual transformation.

Origins & History

Ashtanga Yoga was systematized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) in Mysore, India. He learned the practice from his teacher, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is often called the "father of modern yoga." The term "Ashtanga" comes from the Sanskrit words "ashta" (eight) and "anga" (limbs), referring to the eight-fold path of yoga described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. This includes ethical guidelines, physical postures, breath control, and meditation practices.

The Practice

Ashtanga Yoga follows a specific sequence of postures, always practiced in the same order. The practice synchronizes breath with movement (vinyasa), creating internal heat that purifies the body and calms the mind. There are six series in total: • Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa) - "Yoga Therapy" - purifies and aligns the body • Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana) - "Nerve Cleansing" - purifies the nervous system • Advanced A, B, C, D - for experienced practitioners Most practitioners spend years mastering the Primary Series before moving on.

Mysore Style

The traditional way to learn Ashtanga is called "Mysore style," named after the city where Pattabhi Jois taught. In Mysore classes: • Students practice at their own pace • The teacher provides individual guidance and adjustments • New poses are given when the student is ready • The practice is personalized to each individual's needs This approach allows beginners and advanced practitioners to practice together, each receiving appropriate instruction.

Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga
